How can the term Wellbeing be defined?

The term Wellbeing, in German, Wohlbefinden, refers to the feeling one experiences when one feels satisfaction or happiness. As you can see, this is a subjective sensation. Accordingly, it depends on how one defines satisfaction and happiness for oneself. For one person, it may be about success in their professional life, while for another, it may be the absence of stress. 

Wellbeing – the lasting effect of wellness

Many are familiar with the concept of wellness stays. Here, it is mainly about relaxing and letting the soul dangle. Stress and hustle in everyday life have no place here; rather, the relaxation of the body takes priority. However, wellness only lasts for a limited duration, and as soon as one is back in everyday life, all the tensions and problems return.

In contrast, wellbeing is about maintaining a state of relaxation and satisfaction. Instead of just addressing the surface of a problem, wellbeing is interested in ensuring that body, mind, and soul are in harmony. In this way, it is possible for a temporary state to develop into a lasting one. 

Wellbeing essential for today's generation

Today's generation has grown up with technology and is thus familiar with all the social media. This means constant availability, no matter what time of day. Even after finishing work, this generation is still reachable via email, WhatsApp, SMS, etc., and tends to never take a break, let alone turn off their phone. For employers, this has immense advantages, but not for the employees of a company. Therefore, it is all the more important to adopt a healthy attitude towards life and thus arm oneself against everyday stress. This is where wellbeing plays a major role, so that harmful influences cannot cause damage and a sense of wellbeing remains. 

5 elements of wellbeing

The area of wellbeing can be divided into the following 5 elements:

  • Finding purpose

In order to appreciate things, situations, etc., one must see a purpose in the work one does.

  • Emotional and social relationships

No matter what situation one is in, it is important not to go the path alone, but to receive support from people and thus maintain valuable interpersonal relationships.

  • Financial security

Knowing that one is financially secure reduces a feeling of stress and conveys a sense of security.

  • Belonging to a group

Experiencing recognition from a group to which one belongs and being appreciated by it is an important part when it comes to wellbeing.

  • Being physically fit

Having enough energy and being in good health is probably the most important point when it comes to a person's wellbeing. 

As just explained, wellbeing is, on one hand, a subjective perception that is experienced differently by each person, and on the other hand, there are things that must be assumed in order to even achieve this state. To cope with daily stress and not let it negatively affect you, the existence of wellness, thus transforming it into a lasting state, is essential.
